There are several ways to obtain a license as a school counselor in Kansas and Missouri, including a temporary license for mid-program students. No teaching degree and/or experience is required to be a school counselor in Kansas. The Exceptional Child course is required for Missouri.
School experiences and development activities are integrated into the master’s course in school counseling for students who have no training. No additional costs or credit hours are required.
All students are eligible for a First School Counselor License upon successful completion of the master’s program and other Kansas Department of Education requirements, including passing the license exam and background check. Our consulting program is conducted primarily online via an asynchronous course, meaning you work independently throughout the week and enjoy the structure provided by regular deadlines.
Two required residencies (Group Counseling and Counseling Skills) provide important opportunities to engage with faculty and peers. Internships and internships, which require you to seek a place in a school or mental health setting, offer experiential learning and strengthen your preparation for professional practice.
We recognize that some students will need the flexibility to continue the program at a traditional pace, while others will desire an accelerated flexibility. Luckily, at GMerccyU, we offer a degree that meets all of these requirements.
At you will be assigned a faculty mentor from the first day you are our student to guide you through the program. Faculty mentors hold optional group mentoring sessions once per semester and are also available to discuss individual problems or concerns.
Comprehensive School Counseling
Students who complete our program will have the essential skills, knowledge and training they need to be successful as new Consultants. In fact, it is not uncommon for our students to be offered postgraduate positions with field experience, which is a testament to their preparation for the consulting profession.
To qualify for Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) status in the state of Pennsylvania, you must successfully complete 60 semester hours of graduate courses that meet the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Education Programs (CACREP) curriculum requirements.
Our curriculum has been developed in accordance with the core course requirements proposed by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Allied Education Programs (CACREP), although Gwynedd’s program is not currently accredited by CACREP.
Upon graduation, you must pass the National Counselor Exam (NCE) and meet graduate supervision requirements to receive your LPC credential in the state of Pennsylvania. The Gwynedd Mercy University Master of Science in Counseling meets state requirements in all majors.

Fieldwork courses are limited to 12 students per class and academic courses to 18. However, it is not uncommon for academic courses to have 14 to 16 students.

Although we don’t officially assign you to a cohort, you’ll find that students who start the program at the same time and choose the same pace (traditional or accelerated model) often overlap in terms of course enrollment. This program model allows you to build relationships with your fellow students without sacrificing the flexibility that our program prides itself on.
Yes! Internships and internships have hourly requirements that require flexibility while maintaining full-time employment. These hourly requirements are designed to meet government and licensing standards. Our field coordinator will work with you in advance to create a plan.
