The training for the PhD program in School Psychology includes 75 hours of pre-practice, 200 hours in school, two years of advanced work (600 hours per year, or about 20 hours/week) in school with a possible option to be in a non-school setting, and and one year of accredited full-time, pre-doctoral internships, all with campus-related seminars where they receive university supervision and benefit from the experience of their peers.
Clinical Psychology Fellowship Program
As its name suggests, the pre-practicum takes place before the practicum. Students complete 75 pre-practice hours in May and June of their first year of study. The purpose of the pre-practicum is for students to gain observational experience and learn about school ecology. In addition to the school-based observation experience, students participate in a one-hour pre-practice seminar on campus, taught by one of the school’s leading psychologists.
Students complete 200 hours of experience in school psychology during their second year in the program. Before starting an internship, students must have a contract signed by their institution and Northeastern University. The program begins in September and continues until the end of the public school year in June. Practical supervision and supervision must be provided by a state-certified school psychologist with at least three years of experience. Students must receive at least one hour of face-to-face supervision per week during practice.

In the Social, Emotional, and Behavioral Assessment course, students must complete a comprehensive assessment that includes (a) structured direct observation, (b) teacher, student, and parent interviews, and (c) broad and narrow rating scales.
Students complete 600 hours of advanced coursework during years 3 and 4 of the program. Students typically meet this requirement by completing 20 hours of outside work during the academic year (September-June). In all cases, the first 600 hours of work placement must occur in a K-12 school. Although it is possible for the second 600 hour Advanced Fieldwork Placement to be completed at a non-school site, students who wish to continue this in their second year of AFW must obtain approval from the program faculty before applying to non-school Sites. Decisions about whether students can pursue AFW placements in non-school settings will be made based on the breadth and depth of prior school-based experiences.
Area supervisors in school districts must have a Massachusetts teacher’s license (certification) as a school psychologist and at least three years of experience as a school psychologist. Supervising an excellent work practice involves a minimum of one hour per week, in a face-to-face format. In non-school settings, supervisors must be licensed health care providers in the state of Massachusetts and have three years of experience as a psychologist.
Psychological Science Ph.d. Program
Students are enrolled in a seminar course, taught by (a) a certified school psychologist during the practicum year and (b) a licensed psychologist during the senior years of practice. The university manager maintains contact with the department manager by visiting the site twice and calling when necessary. At the end of the year, field and university managers decide whether the student has progressed well in the core areas and is ready for the next work experience.
Northeastern University’s School Psychology MS/CAGS and PhD programs offer an optional concentration in Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) that gives students the opportunity to apply to sit for the BCBA exam after completion of the concentration.
