An abdominal sonographer can help diagnose conditions that affect the aorta, liver, kidney, gallbladder, pancreas, spleen, bladder, thyroid, breast, scrotum, pediatric ultrasound, and analyze blood flow in these organs. Ultrasonographers also assist with interventional procedures, which mean biopsies, needle aspiration, fluid drainage, which involve sterile drapes, needles, and body fluids.
OB/GYN sonographers specialize in measuring the health of the fetus and pregnant women, as well as detecting or analyzing possible abnormalities in the fetus and evaluating female reproductive organs. Ultrasonography will also help with interventional procedures.
It is expected that most sonographers will perform all ultrasound examinations in a hospital, imaging center, or emergency care center. Only at a private breast center or doctor’s office will the sonographer specialize in a certain area.
