The MSGC program offers a Master of Science in Genetic Counseling through the Medical College of Wisconsin Graduate School. The program is a full-time, day program with a cohort of 10 students at the beginning of each fall semester. The duration is 21 months and includes four autumn/spring periods and one summer. Coursework in the program consists of 56 semester units of instruction, including coursework, clinical placement, and a research thesis. Students who successfully complete the program will be eligible to take the American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC) certification exam.

The Master of Science in Genetic Counseling (MSGC) program values the unique backgrounds, experiences, and identities of all people, consistent with our program’s mission to “develop outstanding genetic counseling leaders who reflect the tangible and invisible diversity of the communities we serve With this lens, we hope to recruit students who have strengths in various fields from various perspectives. We seek candidates with strong academic and critical thinking, readiness for rigorous graduate study, effective communication skills, conscious community and cultural engagement, psychosocial skills, and diverse leadership styles. In support of this goal, we strive to provide a comprehensive review during the admissions process. The Association of American Medical Colleges defines holistic review as:
“A mission-based admissions or selection process that takes into account the applicant’s life and academic history, characteristics and academic indicators, and the applicant’s merit in study, practice, and teaching. The holistic review allows the committee admissions to consider the “holistic” applicant without overdoing it Focus on any one factor.”
The online application for our program includes optional, broadly worded background and identity questions. If an applicant chooses to self-disclose this information, these characteristics and experiences will be used as part of the overall review.

We recognize our responsibility to use this information fairly and impartially for the overall admissions process. Individuals involved in the admissions process are selected by the program based on their diverse backgrounds and experiences, and additionally receive implicit bias training as a condition of participation. The program also includes multiple assessment practices with an emphasis on continuous improvement of the admissions process.
Applications for the MSGC program must be submitted to the Graduate School by January 15 at 11:59 p.m. Science and Technology Committee. The MSGC application portal will open on September 1.

To help applicants decide, the program offers prospective students an optional field trip to visit the campus and experience the culture of our institution. Details of the site visit will be shared at the time of the interview and will be coordinated by Program Management and current students. After the interview process is completed, a field trip will be offered in early April. Program directors, admissions committee members and interviewers do not participate in site visits. Field trips are not considered part of the interview process and are not used to influence the candidate’s program ranking. Letters of Recommendation Three letters of recommendation are required from lecturers in relevant courses, research advisers, advocacy experience supervisors, genetic counsellors, mentors or others with professional experience who can assess your potential for a career in genetic counselling.
