Run an Experiment: Turn this fun project into a science fair experiment by predicting how temperature affects crystal formation. You can investigate the effect of cooling rate on crystals by isolating a growing geode in a hot water bath, bringing it to room temperature, and placing it in the refrigerator.

Explore the principles engineers use to build buildings to withstand seismic events such as earthquakes. Use styrofoam boards as a “floor” and make constructions using craft sticks. What this means is that if you mix the same amount of chemicals under the same conditions, the color change will occur after the same amount of time (like clockwork). Do an experiment: predict whether changing the concentration of the starting chemicals or the temperature of the liquids will increase or decrease the rate of color change. Do the experiment, record the results, and see if you can explain them.

Most common plastics come from petroleum, but you can make plastic from milk. Basically what you are doing is squeezing the milk. Heat 1/2 cup milk or cream over low to medium heat until thick. Whisk in the lemon juice or vinegar until the mixture begins to thicken. Take the pan off the heat. When the liquid has cooled, rinse the curd with water. These curds are a natural casein polymer. You made homemade plastic!

Make it a science experiment: Your experiment can examine the properties of this plastic, including how long it stretches, how much weight it can support, and whether it can be used as a modeling compound. Another option is to compare the amount of plastic you get from cow’s milk versus goat’s or sheep’s milk. What? do you get the same amount of plastic from cream and milk?

Spinning Christmas Tree Science Experiments

Most leaves look green because of the chlorophyll, but they are actually many different colors. In the fall, plants produce less chlorophyll, so you may see other colors. You can use paper chromatography to see the color on the leaves. To do this, grind the leaves to break up their cells (a blender works well), place them in a small jar, add enough alcohol to cover the leaves, and insert a long piece of coffee filter paper into the jar. You want one end of the paper strip in the leaf mix and the other end extended up and out of the jar. As the liquid moves over the paper, it binds the ink molecules together. Small molecules move faster while larger molecules move slower. Over time, this separates the ink.
