John Street School is holding a fifth grade science fair on February 17th. The students presented their experimental results to other fifth graders, fourth graders, administration members, and their STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) teacher.

Each student selects and researches a topic of their choice. “Students work on their projects for approximately five to six weeks,” the district said in a press release. One of the parameters is constant and variable.

Students use the blackboard to present selected topics, hypotheses, materials, procedures, data, and conclusions. “During the fair, students presented their boards and experimental results to other fifth graders, fourth graders, administration and STEM teachers,” the district added.

The purpose of the experiment is to determine whether plants grow better in water or in soil. You will need a cup, plant seeds, water, sunlight and a bag of soil. Start by placing three plant seeds into one cup of water, and placing the soil and three seeds into another cup. Periodically place both plants in the sun. Then see what happens. After completing the experiment, you will find that plants do better when placed in the ground. While most seeds can only grow in water, the process is slow and the plants are shorter. However, depending on the seeds you choose, some plants won’t grow at all.

The purpose of this experiment is to find out whether adding additives to plant water can change the growth rate of plants. For this experiment, use a mixture of sugar and water, a mixture of salt and water, plain water, plant seeds, a bag of soil, and a small paper cup. Start by placing the soil and some seeds in three different cups, labeling the cups as “cup a”, “cup b” and “cup c”. Water “cup a” with sugar water mixture, give “cub b” salt water mixture and “cub c” only gets water. The purpose of this experiment is to show how much iron is in your breakfast cereal. To do this experiment, you will need a strong magnet, a sealed plastic bag, water, a plate, and iron-fortified cereal. Pour 1 cup of cereal into a plastic bag and half fill the bag with water. Seal the bag and gently squeeze the dough until the granules break and become runny. Shake the bag a few more times. Eventually you will see bits of metal coming toward the magnet. After doing some research, you will find that iron, the metal used to make nails, is actually located within the grain.
