Variables & Controls In A Science Experiment

Milk and cookies are every child’s favorite, so why not use them to teach science? I thought milk and cookies were the perfect ingredients for our first science experiment and of course, we could eat the leftovers!

. This experiment allows students to investigate why some things sink and others float while observing and experimenting.

To introduce the concept of momentum I like to start with a short lesson and explain some additional science vocabulary. Terms such as molecules, density, and dynamics. I also ask questions. “Why do you think some things float, and others sink?” and “How can something as heavy as a cargo ship cross the ocean without sinking?”.

I ask the questions, “Are the cookies alive?” and “Do they sink or float in milk?”. As I walked through the steps of the scientific method, I listed questions and guided the students through the steps they would take to find out.

After putting the students into groups of 4 each was given 4 different cookies and 4 cups of milk. We used mini cookies that I found at Walmart and the dollar store.

Before starting the science experiment, the students looked at the properties of each cookie and recorded these on their paper. They then predicted whether the cookie would sink or float.

When the students took the tests, the results were not always what they expected. Some cookies sank right away while others took a while. Students observed which cookies absorbed milk quickly and which did not.

Students graph their results and discuss why they think each cookie sinks or floats. Some of the things students consider are: the weight of the cookie, if there are visible air pockets, “Are there 1 or 2 cookies with filling in the middle?”, and do the chocolate chips in the cookie sink because of the weight or float because of oil. and fat in them?

In this Instructable, I will walk you through each step using a test sample. You’ll also learn the meaning of each step as I break down the scientific method.

Our test example will be how many sugar cubes dissolve in water at different temperatures. Basically, I drop sugar cubes into cups of water of different temperatures and time how long it takes for the sugar cubes to “disappear” (dissolve).
