Every morning on his way to classrooms in Cambridge, Massachusetts, Taiwan, Ajiton Moby walks through a small park in Kendall Square. There he came across a statue with seven inscriptions: “The most creative square mile on the planet”.
How To Hire Better: Mit Sloan Economist Danielle Li
A tech-loving CEO on a mission to build a thriving economy like his native Nigeria, that particular square mile is the place to be, at least for now.
Ajetunmobi, 37, a Sloan Fellow at MIT’s Sloan School of Management, says, “One of my professors says that all kinds of great technologies have been created that will change the world in the next 10 to 20 years.”
“I think the quiet part of that statement is that it was created at a place like MIT. So I can see this great technology before it comes out. Hold on world.”
Ajetunmobi is part of the aristocracy of mid-career professionals who can call themselves Sloan Fellows. He’s in good company. Kofi Annan, former Secretary General of the United Nations and winner of the Nobel Peace Prize; Lord John Browne of Madingley, former chairman and chief executive of BP and member of the British House of Lords; And Frank Shrontz, the president of Boeing, is a Sloan Fellow.
Growing From Clusters To Ecosystems
There are only three schools in the world that offer the programs – Stanford Graduate School of Management, MIT Sloan and the London School of Business. Founded by renowned General Motors Chairman Alfred P. Sloan and his foundation, it is the first general management and leadership education program aimed at experienced managers. It is considered among the most prestigious business degrees in the world.
Compared to a traditional two-year MBA program, the 12-month Sloan program is very fast-paced and highly selective. All three programs graduate only about 250 students each year. The school’s reputation and the ability of the executives it attracts combine to create a team experience that is set apart from other management degrees. Graduates include CEOs of top companies such as Pfizer, Hewlett-Packard and Citigrop. They run famous universities, banks and stock exchanges. They hold high positions in world government or were former US presidential candidates. Three of the last four US postmaster generals (not Louis Dejoy) were Sloan Fellows, as was the former US Coast Guard commandant.
Jane Charlton, executive director of postgraduate programs and student experience at the London School of Business, says: “The skills and experience of the students and what they bring together are an integral part of what makes the program unique.” “The LBS Sloan course is designed specifically for experienced senior professionals seeking to effectively lead change and promote organizational performance.”

So what is a Sloan Fellows degree? It is not an MBA in the traditional sense, although MIT programs offer Sloan MBAs. Elite residential MBAs typically attract students with 4 to 10 years of experience, take two years to complete, and prepare graduates for less demanding professional roles. Sloan Fellows is a successful season manager. They typically have 10 to 20 years of experience entering the program and move into senior management positions upon graduation.
Nor is Sloan an executive MBA, which, while attracting senior executives with more experience, runs a part-time program with weekend classes to allow its students to continue working. EMBAs typically focus on programs that allow students to immediately put their lessons into practice while working on existing business issues within their company. Sloan Fellows is a full-time degree. Most colleagues live on their campuses and take time off from their careers.
“In Sloan Fellows, you get a whole year to focus on yourself. Johanna Hising DiFabio, assistant dean of the Sloan Fellows MBA & Executive MBA at MIT Sloan says you don’t try to work at the same time. “After the first semester, Sloan Fellows also have several core courses so that they can design and create their own curriculum based on what they are interested in moving into, whether that is sustainable entrepreneurship. Data or whatever.”
Alfred P. Sloan, Jr. The CEO of General Motors created the first program in 1930 after realizing that his company’s engineers lacked management skills. Erwin H. Shell of MIT proposed a business education program for contract engineers and developed the MIT Sponsored Fellowships, later renamed the MIT Sloan Fellows. The Sloan program expanded to Stanford in 1957 and finally to London in 1968.

Although all three Sloan programs are not officially affiliated, they all share an ethos of rigorous business education practice to experienced and talented individuals with business and academic credentials.
“While each school plays to its strengths—strategy and leadership and advanced experience in the case of LBS—there is a strong bond between Sloan graduates,” Charlton says. “Before the epidemic, there was cooperation between former students, which we want to continue in the future.
Similar to the Executive MBA program, most Sloan Fellows were once sponsored by their company. Now most pay their own way.
The MIT program is the largest of the three programs with 109 students compared to Stanford’s 84 and LBS’ 52. LBS is the most experienced team requiring at least 12 years of experience to perform, while its current 2022 squad has an average of 18 years of experience. This year, Stanford registered the most women ever for its Sloan program at 37%.
