In the spring of 1897, notice was received that Cedar City had been selected for the Branch Normal School, the first training school in southern Utah. Over the next three months, the city worked to complete Ward Hall on Main Street for first grade. The school opened in September.

The school has been open for two months, but officials told school administrators that Ward Hall did not comply with state law and had until next September to build a new building on land ceded to the state alone. There was a school. Or miss school.
The residents of Cedar City came together, and on January 5, 1898, a group of residents trekked through shoulder-deep snow into the Cedar Mountains. It took us four days to reach Sawmill near Brian Head Ski Resort. When they got there, they found that the wagon they had brought couldn’t carry the logs through the heavy snow. I needed a sled.
The way back was just as tough as the way up. The snow continued to fall, breaking the trail they had originally followed. It was at this stage of their march that the old brown horses proved their mettle. A horse kept in front of the party stepped into the drift, pushing the snow away until the road collapsed. He stopped for a break and started to stand up. “Old Sorrel” was believed to be the savior of the expedition.
They continued to work from January to July, and by September 1898 Old Main was almost complete. It contains a large chapel for religious gatherings, a library and reading room, a natural history museum, biology and physics laboratories, classrooms and offices.
