We understand the difficulty that students face in preparing for and taking exams around the world. If you cannot take the ACT or SAT, your application will not be in jeopardy. Fluency in English is an undergraduate requirement at Stanford. However, we do not require you to take any standardized test to demonstrate your English skills. While these tests help us assess our applicants’ English skills, you may feel that your fluency will be more evident in other parts of your application. We don’t have the skill tests we need. Generally, we accept English proficiency tests from applicants whose native language is not English and/or the primary language of instruction at their high school is not English.
If you want to take a proficiency test in English but feel that the cost is a financial burden for you, we offer Duolingo English Test fee waivers. We are only able to offer fee waivers to students who have demonstrated financial need through a completed application. You must indicate on your application that you plan to apply for financial aid. Once you have submitted your application, please email us to request a fee waiver. Your email should include your full name, school, and date of birth. To ensure that your test results reach us on time, please request payment withdrawal no later than one week after the application deadline (November 8th for REA, January 12th for RD, and March 22nd for Transfer ).
