The Summer Health Professions Education Program (shpep) Is A Transformative Summer Experience For Students Interested In The Health Professions

We are pleased to welcome you to the UCLA/CDU Health Professions Education Summer Program (SHPEP) at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, UCLA School of Dentistry, UCLA School of Nursing, and Charles R. Drew University School of Nursing. At UCLA/CDU SHPEP, we are committed to developing the future leaders who will change the face of medicine, nursing, and dentistry and improve healthcare, policy, and research in underserved communities.
UCLA/CDU SHPEP’s mission is to serve as a model community where students explore various health issues impacting medically underserved communities through problem-based learning cases, lectures, clinical experiences, small group discussions, and research projects.
Students will also improve their study skills and strengthen their foundations in science. Upon completion of this six-week program, students will be more aware of the urgent need for health professionals in medically underserved communities and the educational pathways that lead to the delivery of medical, nursing, dental and health services to underserved populations.
Scholars will participate in workshops that encourage the development of analytical reading, studying, time management and analytical research skills. Scientists will also participate in a problem-based learning (PBL) curriculum, where they study clinical cases and develop action plans to resolve clinical cases. PBL will reinforce the concept of science lectures (general physics and chemistry), biology and organic chemistry.
Health Professions Advising At Barnard College
Scholars will develop individual academic plans to achieve specific career goals. Scholars will participate in individual counseling sessions that will help them prepare for enrollment in a health professional school. Health professionals will give presentations to scientists to better understand pre-health professional requirements so they can plan for the remainder of their undergraduate career.
Scholars will increase their passion for the health profession and create a peer community that will support them in their journey. Scholars will talk about mental health, imposter syndrome and other important topics to ensure they have the skills to succeed in the health professions.
Scholars will have interactive panels with healthcare professionals and program alumni to discuss various career paths and opportunities. Some health professionals will give presentations to students to better understand the scope of practice of different health careers. Scholars will also be able to participate in job-specific simulations and experiences to enhance their understanding of the healthcare profession.
The scholar develops statistical and analytical skills working on small group projects related to describing and developing an understanding of health problems and the epidemiology of underserved communities. The scholar will then define the underserved communities and propose appropriate health interventions to ameliorate some of the public health problems.

Throughout the program, scientists will be paired with current healthcare professionals who will mentor them throughout the program. The Scholar will maintain this mentoring relationship after the 6 week program, to ensure Scholars are an ongoing support system.

UCLA Housing requires people who use the hostel to have access to health insurance should anything happen to them while they are in the hostel. As a result, scientists are required to provide proof of health insurance.
Summer Health Professions Education Program
It’s probably not a good idea to take the car on a 6 week program. On-campus parking is expensive; parking will cost you around $75/month, which is the equivalent of $150 during your time at UCLA. There are great bus connections to downtown L.A. and to Santa Monica and to the beach.
We strongly promote reading as part of our curriculum and will provide you with books for needed reading in class, but any book you already want to read would be a good place to start before you join.
Yes. The John Wooden Center is a multi-purpose facility. It features 3 gyms, basketball courts, indoor and outdoor weight training, stretching mats, stationary bikes, stair climbers, treadmills, rowing machines and rock walls.
Yes, everywhere except hostel. This is strictly enforced out of concern for your safety and the safety of others and that includes your parents and family. Absolutely NO ONE except SHPEP students is allowed to enter or live in the hostel. However, on MOVE-IN and MOVE-OUT days, your parents are most welcome to help you enter the hostel, as we welcome their assistance!!

Can I participate in SHPEP if I am a junior or senior in college, or if I have graduated from college?
Not. SHPEP is exclusive to freshmen and current sophomores. However, we encourage you to pursue other enrichment opportunities.
Shpep Info Session (summer Health Professions Education Program)
SHPEP does not have the MCAT exam or DAT preparation component. However, the program’s basic science curriculum includes content included in the MCAT and DAT exams.
The pre-health advisor may be a member of the faculty or staff of your institution in your dean’s office, careers center or student services.
I’m a freshman and haven’t received my grades yet, can I send a list of my high school grades?
SHPEP does not accept high school transcripts. If you are a freshman in college and you have not received your semester/first quarter grades, we recommend that you submit your transcripts to the National Programs Office in January once your semester/first quarter grades have been determined and completed.
Aspiring Physical Therapist Chosen For Summer Health Professions Education Program
This should be someone who knows your academic and personal character. Ideally, this should be a pre-health counselor and/or college professor. If none of these people know you well enough, a high school physics teacher or local dentist or doctor who knows you well will work. Choose someone who can talk about you in detail. (And don’t forget to ask if they can write you a positive letter of reference!)
SHPEP is an intensive full-time program with mandatory evenings and weekends. You will not be able to join jobs or take other classes. One hundred percent your focus should be on SHPEP while you are here.
I am a recipient of the federal government’s Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals Program (DACA). Can I still register for this program?
Students must hold US citizenship, hold a permanent visa (not a student visa), or be a DACA grantee to participate in this program.
Shpep Iowa 2023 Virtual Info Session
SHPEP is an undergraduate program for freshmen and sophomores. However, we encourage you to pursue other enrichment opportunities.
You can apply to the UCLA/CDU SHPEP as long as you have not transferred to the four-year institution in the summer you plan to attend SHPEP.
In addition to UC’s vaccination requirements, the campus has implemented a number of health and safety protocols designed to keep the Bruin community safe this fall. Please see our UCLA COVID Protocols page for a complete list of these protocols.
All students participating in SHPEP, PREP, and RAP are expected to comply with UC health and safety protocols to participate in our program.
