Uc Berkeley Computer Science Transfer Requirements – Welcome to Berkeley Computer Science, new transfer students! Whether you are just beginning your transfer journey at Community College or are in your first semester at UC Berkeley, we are here to help. Find resources and information below.
Can I use grades from my previous college to declare a CS? (Applies only to intake cycles before fall 2023)
Uc Berkeley Computer Science Transfer Requirements
We only use UC Berkeley course grades (CS 61A, 61B/BL, and 70) to report CS. You can calculate your CS GPA with this CS Pre-Major GPA calculator.

Visit assist.org and select Computer Science to see a list of math and computer science classes available at your school. You should plan to participate in all articulation activities offered at your school. Some transfer students choose to attend multiple universities to meet more requirements, as the schools often do not offer all of our courses.
I want to transfer from a university outside of CA. How do I know if my classes will change?
1. We very rarely accept a course offered elsewhere as a substitute for CS 61A or 61C. We do not accept transfers for CS 70. Please read our detailed syllabus before requesting a fee check to ensure you meet these requirements. Here are some highlights:
If you believe you have completed a course equivalent to CS 61A or UC Berkeley 61C, please email cs-advising@cs.berkeley.edu. You must submit the syllabus and any additional information about the course. Advisors will coordinate with faculty to review course materials for equivalency. They may consider the course fully or partially equivalent.
Announcements Spring 2023
2. On the other hand, courses equivalent to CS 61B are more likely to be offered at other institutions; if your course was called something like “Data Structures” we might accept that. Courses named after programming languages are rarely appropriate. These are some of the questions we will ask you about your course:
If you believe you have completed a course equivalent to CS 61B, please send the course syllabus and any other training materials to cs-advising@cs.berkeley.edu.
ASSIST says that the course I took only partially meets one of the Berkeley requirements. Do I still have to attend classes here?
Yes. If you see the text “Articulation is contingent on completion of a college course,” your class is not fully transferable; this is especially common with CS 61B gaskets. Please contact us at cs-advising@cs.berkeley.edu so we can discuss whether a bridging course or a full course at UCB would be best for you after your transfer.
Edmonds Community College
I passed the AP computer science exam. Is an acceptable AP score eligible for CS 61B transfer credit?
We no longer offer credit for the AP Computer Science exam. If you have passed this exam, you are ready for our 61A course.
I am interested in meeting the upper class requirements for a CS Major or Minor at another university. How are they reviewed?
Yes, see sample plans for examples. The more classes you have completed before transferring, the more likely it is that you will graduate in 2 years. You might consider taking classes in the summer before starting in the fall.
Eecs B.s. Junior Transfers
Yes, see sample plans for examples. Transfers are guaranteed for four semesters (2 years), however, if you are within the unit limit during the fourth semester, you may request a fifth semester. Please work with the CS advisor and L&S advisor if you wish to request an additional semester.
You should assume that you will spend the first semester completing technical requirements that you were unable to take at your university. Most students start at CS61A. See sample plans for more examples.
Since admission decisions for this specialization will be based on the technical requirements adopted at Berkeley, it is important to maximize your potential to do well. We recommend taking only 2 technical courses per semester.
ASSIST shows agreements between UC Berkeley universities and California universities. But what about courses at a community college outside of California or other four-year institutions?
By The Numbers
1. We very rarely accept a course offered elsewhere as a substitute for CS 61A, 61C, or CS 70. Please read our detailed syllabus before requesting a course review to ensure you meet these requirements. Here are some of the highlights:
If you believe you have completed a course corresponding to CS 61A, 61C, or CS 70 UC Berkeley, please contact the current professor of the corresponding UC Berkeley course. You should send them the syllabus and any additional information about the course. The department should review the equivalency of the training materials. They may consider the course fully or partially equivalent. Ask them to send a copy to cs-advising@cs.berkeley.edu about their evaluation.
2. On the other hand, CS 61B equivalent courses are more likely to be offered at other institutions; if your course was called something like “Data Structures” we might accept that. Courses named after programming languages are rarely appropriate. These are some of the questions we will ask you about your course:
If you believe you have completed a course equivalent to CS 61B, please submit this Faculty Evaluation Form. You must include the course syllabus and any other training materials.
How To Get Into An Elite Computer Science School
Yes. This is especially common with CS 61B gaskets. If you have any questions, please contact us at cs-advising@cs.berkeley.edu
I am interested in meeting the upper class requirements for a CS Major or Minor at another university. How are they controlled? Preparing to apply for a transfer to Berkeley as a junior is something to prepare for as soon as you know what major you want to study. Browse careers to find out which specialization is best for you. Once admitted, you cannot change your major or add a second major, so be sure to apply for the correct major at UC Berkeley.
To become a better candidate, you should join clubs on your college campus, such as robotics, computer science, chemistry, or physics clubs. Phi Theta Kappa is the perfect way to show you’re ready for the rigorous UC Berkeley curriculum.
You must also answer 3 of 7 additional questions. Each response is limited to 350 words. You can choose which three questions to answer. It is important to choose the questions that are most relevant to your experience and best reflect your individual situation.
Prospective Transfer Students
There are many ways to explore Berkeley. Below are some of the best ways to meet for the first time.
Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) by March 2 of last year ($400 million in financial aid goes unclaimed in California each year, and $3 billion in federal financial aid goes unclaimed each year, according to theconversation .com in March 2015) . Students who are not eligible to file the FAFSA and who qualify for the AB 540 nonresident tuition waiver must apply for assistance by completing the California Dream Act Application by March 2. Many paths lead to a Berkeley degree, and some of them lead through other institutions. At Berkeley, junior transfer students make up nearly 15 percent of our student population and are a valued part of our community. If you are considering transferring to our program, please read the following sections carefully to ensure you meet the necessary requirements. We also have a range of resources designed specifically for transfers.
Berkeley gives top priority for admission to California college applicants who have completed all required Berkeley foundation preparatory courses, including courses equivalent to Berkeley literacy courses, as outlined in ASSIST. Transfers from other UC campuses, other four-year institutions, international schools, or non-California charter schools are given lower priority.
To be eligible for admission, transfer applicants must meet UC’s admission requirements, which are detailed online at Berkeley’s admissions website. Applicants must complete at least 60 transferable UC semester units by the end of the spring semester before admission in the fall. They must also complete all required lower class courses for their intended major as listed by ASSIST. Highly recommended courses listed in ASSIST must already be taken if offered at a community college.
Frequently Asked Questions
While ASSIST does not cover articulation agreements between UC campuses or between UC and other out-of-state four-year schools, it can be used as a guide to determine which required courses must be completed prior to admission.
Please note that the Inter-Segment General Education Transfer Program (IGETC) offered at California universities is not accepted by the University of .
Potential transfers should visit Berkeley’s recruiting site for complete information on the application process. Hiring decisions for transfers are published at the end of April.
Admission to Berkeley is extremely competitive. In addition to applying to Berkeley, potential transfer candidates must apply to majors at other campuses in the University of California system, as well as at other four-year institutions. It is also important that applicants choose their major carefully, as the School of Medicine does not allow junior majors to be changed after the January 3 application deadline. Also, transfers cannot add a second field of study after admission.
