Berkeley undergraduate Ian Castro (Media Studies and Microbiology, Class of 2021) will attend Berkeley’s upcoming SEED Scholars teach students. Read our previous feature on how Ian got involved with the Berkeley Science community.

Answer: 6, Introduction to Computational Thinking, is a new course in the scientific method. Designed as 8 intensive six-week summer courses, the course teaches key programming concepts and exposes students to the interdisciplinary work of scientists.

In Chapter 6 we will focus primarily on exploratory analysis and the social implications and applications of science. This summer, students used Python to analyze real-world scenarios such as the Pennsylvania presidential election, cases of COVID-19 in the United States, gender representation in Hollywood, and homelessness in Oakland. We also explore the use and understanding of vision to convey information, and the ethical implications of using human contexts and ethical behaviors.

A: Compared to 8, 6 spends more time introducing basic computing concepts such as abstraction and algorithms, and less time on various statistical techniques involved in science. Our courses also emphasize the importance of communicating and understanding through visualization, as much of our work revolves around exploration and visualization rather than statistical analysis.

Data Science Undergraduate Studies

Our courses also aim to highlight the social and interdisciplinary work of scientists. Each week, guest speakers with experience in the fields of environmental planning, law, and economics teach classes on how they use science in their work. Regardless of the differences, 6 students will find the information in the first few weeks of 8 very familiar and easy to understand, because the course is designed to connect directly with 8 content.

A: Through 6, our goal is to bridge the gap between experienced students and students who have not taken introductory computer science courses such as Computer Science 61A and Foundations of Science, 8. These courses guide students, in Especially the students who don’t have it. Prior exposure to computing or statistics, stay away from the major.

6 is specifically designed for these students to help them succeed in other courses in the science pathway. By offering a well-paced introductory course in the summer before students take CS61A or 8 in the fall or spring semesters, we hope to increase the enrollment and participation of minorities in the field—including women, first race, and including Black and Latino students—by teaching them key skills and building confidence in their numbers.

A: Currently, only students enrolled in the SEED Scholars Program 6 are eligible to enroll. However, we plan to enroll summer students interested in science, computer science, or statistics in the next few years. Recruit students, but worry about not doing well in accelerated introductory courses. Unfortunately, students who have already completed 8 courses are not eligible for 6 courses.

Professor Dan Garcia and his CS 10 course “The Beauty and Joy of Computing” do an amazing job of empowering students who have traditionally been underrepresented in CS, especially women and students of color.
