“Nursing is intense, challenging and rewarding,” said Terri Wormser, Ph.D., RN, dean of the School of Nursing. “Because it covers topics important to patient care, it requires significant commitment from students and faculty alike. Our A.B.S.N. program maximizes what students learn in the classroom, in the laboratory, and through clinical placements over the course of a year.

APSN Students can complete their program quickly, but more than that, they can put their knowledge and skills to work at a time when healthcare systems need more professionals.

“The pressure on hospitals and institutions to deliver exceptional patient care cannot be underestimated,” said GCU President Joseph R. Marbach, Ph.D. “We heard from our partners at Hackensack Meridian

, by local employers in community clinics and students working in the field. This new program helps fill that need.”

“At the same time, the new A.B.S.N. court provides another avenue for students to share their passion for professional training with others. Pursuing a career in nursing can also be financially beneficial, as 2019 national data shows the median salary is about $73,300.

ST PAUL, Minnesota – Imagine walking into your classroom on the first day of your nursing program and walking out 16 months later, with a bachelor’s degree in nursing ready to provide care to real patients.

For students at Concordia University in St. Paul, that’s a reality — part of a new Accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing (ABSN) program launching this summer. Twenty-one students began their inaugural class over the summer, and another 10, including Samuel Master, began this fall.

“I think our community needs care now more than ever,” Maestru said. “So far, I can only say that I wish I had done it sooner.”

“It’s really important to me to really understand the material and get down to it,” said the master. “I learn a lot very quickly, it’s very fast.”

University administrators hope the new program will address the national and local nursing shortage, which is expected to increase through 2030.

“Nurses are needed in the Twin Cities,” said Kendra Sall, track chair of Concordia’s Department of Nursing. “We need a faster way to get students into that professional nursing role.”

Traditional Nursing Program

The program starts three times a year and currently has no waiting list. Students must have 60 credits to enroll and must be independent, says Sal.

“It’s 16 months, so it’s intense,” he said. “So, the student has to be ready to go. We’re here to cheer, inspire and help along the way, but in that 16-month period they do over 700 clinical and simulation hours to prepare them to be ready” .

The plan is good news for Concordia University’s clinical partners, such as Crescent Cove, a pediatric care center in downtown Brooklyn. The nonprofit provides respite and end-of-life care to families of children experiencing life-limiting medical conditions, all free of charge.

“We’re trying to increase our staff; we were trying to increase staff before COVID,” said Kathryn Kohne, director of nursing and operations. “Some of [our] nurses, they had to stay home with their kids. So they cut back on their hours, but we didn’t lose any staff.”

Kohne believes an accelerated program offered by Concordia will attract students for whom nursing is truly a calling.

“Covid has really put our industry in front of telecommuters who never considered working,” Kohne said. “They’ve seen it at its worst, so if they’re inspired to practice nursing in the same situation they’ve seen, we’re attracting the best and strongest candidates, and we’re going to be very grateful in our profession.” The university’s accelerated BSN program is one of 10 in the state of Indiana. It is a full-time, five-semester nursing education program. After completing all required prerequisites, the 14 credit hour clinical phase of the program begins in May of each year.

In the fall semester, accelerated second degree students join the junior cohort of the traditional BSN program. Students must attend class five days a week or participate in clinical activities. Courses are taught in a face-to-face format on campus and at designated clinical training sites. Simulation experiences are integrated throughout the curriculum.
