With an enrollment of over 10,500 undergraduates and over 50,000 graduate students, the University of Waterloo is one of the largest engineering schools in Canada and ranks among the top 50 engineering schools in the world.

Why? First, Waterloo Engineering gives students a lot of choice about what they want to study and offers a highly specialized and focused curriculum based on this. Waterloo has more program options than other schools, such as biomedical engineering, civil engineering, and software engineering, as well as different specializations and options.

And unlike other engineering programs, where students take broad, comprehensive courses in their freshman year, Waterloo engineering students begin their elective program early in their freshman year.

(You should do your research to make sure you choose the right program for you) It really pays off in the end. From the start, you receive education and training that is directly applicable to your field of interest.

Waterloo Engineering also has the largest co-op program in the world, reaching 6,900 employees. As an engineering student, you are independent in the Waterloo co-op program (and it is mandatory for all students) and will gain up to 2 years of real-world experience.

As part of this program, you will also complete professional development courses to help you expand your engineering knowledge in real-world situations.

Did you know?: The University of Waterloo is in the heart of Waterloo, Ontario, which has been called the “Silicon Valley of Canada” and is a center of technology (BlackBerry was founded here!). It is also home to many tech companies and startups. This is key to finding great collaborations and will give you a few more opportunities to find a niche you’re really interested in.

Co-op and professional development courses are great opportunities for you to build a well-rounded resume with lots of useful work experience and skill sets (and that will make you more competitive when you graduate). It also allows you to try out a bunch of different jobs and companies and see what’s right for you.

This will give you confidence that you’re on the right track – not to mention you’ll build a really strong network and connections that you can use when you’re looking for a job after graduation. Most students actually work for the company they did their co-op with (and 96% of co-op graduates are employed within 6 months of graduation).

Another thing that makes Waterloo Engineering such a good choice is the dynamic and engaging student life (which is crucial when you need a break from studying!). Because Waterloo, Laurier, and Conestoga are very close together, this city has the smallest population.

U of T Engineering (Toronto, Ontario) – One of the best universities in Canada for engineering sciences

U of T Engineering is Canada’s oldest and largest engineering school. This world-renowned program uses experiential learning and multidisciplinary, collaborative learning to help students think outside of traditional engineering approaches and solve a wide range of social, economic and industrial challenges.

U of T Engineering is highly ranked for electrical and computer engineering and is particularly known for its robotics program and leadership in health engineering.

Another reason it ranks so highly is that it is one of the few schools that offers Engineering Science (EngSci). This program combines maths, science, computer science and humanities in years 1-2, then you choose 1 of 8 majors for years 3-4. Apart from EngSci, there are many other programs to choose from (which they call “Core 8 Programmes”).

There is a lot of flexibility – if you know what you want to study, you can choose Core 8 or EngSci. But if you don’t know yet, you can pursue one, undeclared engineering focus in your first year until you decide at the end of your first year.

With so many study options, it’s important to be able to explore different options and find out what really interests you. We’ve had many students tell us that it takes a lot of the pressure out of first year because they don’t feel like they have to make such a big decision (compared to a school like Waterloo Engineering). Instead, you can take your time, make an informed decision, and then focus your education on that particular interest and career goals.

What makes U of T unique is that it doesn’t just throw students into the co-op, it prepares them for the professional world through comprehensive career exploration programming and pass/fail modules. Not only will you learn how to actually apply for a job, create a resume, and interview, but once you land a job, you’ll have a variety of work experience directly related to your chosen field.
