Chicago is home to many private schools that have developed strong reputations for their nursing programs. Several schools in the state have also established themselves as regional and national leaders for nursing education.
Located in the heart of Chicago, DePaul University is the largest Catholic school in the country. Their mission statement says they focus on education, and while it may seem obvious, their nursing school shows why. Although DePaul does not offer a traditional BSN program, it does offer a five-year combined BS and MSN program. Current RNs can choose to bypass their BSN entirely and enroll in an RN to MSN program, which most schools do not offer. You have to pay to attend this private school, but the nursing options are extensive.
Master Of Nursing Program Retains Top National Ranking
As you might have guessed, the University of St. Xavier is another Catholic school based in Chicago. And, as you might have guessed, SXU is home to one of the top nursing programs in Illinois. Students can choose from a traditional BSN, an online RN to BSN, or a second degree BSN. The MSN is also offered by SXU, as a complete program and graduate certificate. Nursing scholarships are also offered to help cover tuition, so this can be an affordable degree for some students. University of St. Xavier has received the prestigious Center of Excellence in Nursing Education from the National Nursing League every year since 2007.
The University of Illinois at Chicago not only houses one of the best nursing programs in the state, but they also offer in-state tuition to Illinois residents. That makes the traditional BSN income here more affordable than in other schools. There are also six campuses available for nursing students spread throughout northern and central Illinois, including Chicago, Peoria, Quad Cities, Rockford, Springfield, and Urbana. Some first-year students can also receive guaranteed admission to the College of Nursing, so you can find out if you’re ready to be a student before you start your first year. Also, don’t worry about the relatively low NCLEX pass rate; This does not represent the overall quality of the program.
As a college (not a university), Elmhurst will have much smaller class sizes than you’ll find at other schools. However, as a college, you can guarantee that what they offer is worth the tuition. The Elmhurst Department of Nursing has six major programs, three at the undergraduate level and three at the graduate level. These programs include,

Another Catholic school, the University of Saint Francis sets itself apart from the rest in two ways: they are not based in Chicago and they have a unique BSN program. Traditional BSNs have impressive NCLEX pass rates, likely due to the emphasis on experiential learning. Students are matched with areas that most interest them, such as long-term care or mental health, and are allowed to gain clinical experience. If there is a particular nursing specialty you are interested in, St. Francis is definitely worth considering.
Yes, the tuition rate at Loyola University Chicago is quite high, but that’s the price you pay when you want to study at one of the top Catholic private schools in the country. Loyola Chicago has an incredible network of local hospitals and healthcare facilities where you can gain clinical experience while earning your BSN. However, clinical placements are randomly assigned, so don’t expect to end up at your favorite children’s hospital. Plus, if you plan right or take an extra semester, you can even spend some time studying at Loyola Chicago’s campus in Rome, Italy! Most recently, Sisters of the Resurrection provided a $4 million endowment that supports scholarships for students in the CARE (Collaboration, Access, Resources and Equity) pathway and increases the ability of students from diverse backgrounds to attend this prestigious program.
Illinois State University is relatively small for a public school with only 18,000 undergraduate students. This means students can get a small school environment without the high costs of private schools. For nursing students, especially BSN students, smaller classes often mean more attention from professors. Of course, small classes mean nothing to students pursuing an online BSN to RN, online master’s in nursing system administration, or online DNP. But one reason graduates pass the NCLEX at such a high rate may be small class sizes.
The name says it all. Not to be confused with the other schools of the same name on this list, the St. Mary’s Medical Center College of Nursing. Francis offers every type of nursing degree you can think of. But before you apply to the BSN program, you should be aware that SFMC does not offer the required liberal arts courses. Instead, students must complete all of their prerequisite courses at a separate accredited institution. After two years of school, students can transfer to SFMC to complete a comprehensive nursing degree. The college also offers the opportunity to qualified students who have completed their high school years to apply for early admission to the college.

With a 13:1 student to faculty ratio, nursing students will receive a more personalized education at Lewis University. A hallmark of the Lewis nursing program is the traditional BSN, a program that consistently sees graduates pass the NCLEX at a rate of over 90%. Louis has access to Chicago’s extensive network of health care facilities, so students can gain clinical experience directly related to their career goals. Also, since Lewis University is a Catholic private school based in Chicago, the annual tuition rate may be worse.
Tuition may seem high, but, on average, students at Illinois Wesleyan University earn enough in scholarships and grants to cover more than half of tuition. This can make earning a BSN from Illinois Wesleyan very affordable. But the most interesting thing about the school is the BSN program. The curriculum is designed so that nursing students can study abroad and still graduate on time. Minors in health, human service management and Hispanic studies are also available to BSN students. This degree is like no other, and many students can find reasons to choose what Illinois Wesleyan has to offer.
Keep in mind that colleges and universities reserve the right to change tuition rates at any time. The annual tuition rates listed here will vary for each individual student based on a variety of factors, including

A high NCLEX pass rate may be attractive, but it does not guarantee that any graduate will pass the NCLEX the following year. It’s tempting to judge schools based on just one or two factors, but you need to spend time looking at the benefits of each school. Some factors to consider include:
How To Choose A Nursing Program
To be eligible for federal financial aid and the NCLEX, you must earn a BSN from an accredited university. Earning a degree from an unaccredited school can make it difficult to find a job.
