Did you know that only 5-7% of audio engineers and producers in the industry are women*? We spoke to Amara and Ruby, currently studying BSc (Hons) Sound Engineering and Production, about their experiences in the profession and what the future holds for female engineers.
Universities With Sound Engineering Programs
Amara: I was interested in learning the guitar from a young age and after a few years I also learned to play the piano and sing professionally. But after many years of performing, I realized that I didn’t like it. In college I explored music technology and this is where my love for live sound and acoustics began.
Engineering Degree In Indiana
Ruby: I love a challenge and the idea of learning something hands-on with a combination of art and science really suits me. I have always been interested in music and sound. I studied maths at A level and really enjoyed the problem solving aspect of it. Initially, I chose to study a film production course, but soon realized that I liked the sound side of things, which was not the focus of the course. After speaking with the sound engineering module leader, I knew that this course was the best fit for me as it was technical, creative and involved my passion.
Q: What was your overall experience on your course and how did it prepare you for your future career?
Amara: University has been the greatest experience of my life so far and I am so grateful for the support, connections and opportunities. Sure, completing a degree can be stressful, but it’s all worth it if you’re passionate about what you’re studying.
I even landed a job as an assistant sound engineer for the musical Legally Blonde at the Alexandria Theater! It was a great experience and I got to learn a lot about working in the industry.

Ruby: I’ve had people say ‘audio engineering is so special’ and I considered that when I chose the course, but I was blown away! We have covered a lot in a short amount of time. There is a combination of creative and technical modules, but all are interconnected. We often have guest speakers who talk about their careers, including audio engineering, product development, sound design and band/music management, as well as advice from more graduating guests.
My overall experience at university was very difficult, but my course was very enjoyable. Some of the highlights include engaging lectures, networking with industry experts and learning a range of audio engineering skills. All the teachers on my course were very helpful and some of the most interesting people I have ever met.
I also gained work experience shadowing sound engineers at several concerts, from field trips to small theaters, which gave me insight into how production companies run. I hope to gain additional experience in digital audio effects and music data mining.
Amara: More women than ever are entering male-dominated fields, and that makes me really happy. I think there are many positive aspects to this development and I hope it continues. Enabling more women to gain qualifications and start careers in engineering.

Ruby: I hope that more women will join STEM courses in the future, we need more of a balance of men and women in the industry. I hope women feel more confident about starting a career without having to judge why they’re doing it. Also, I hope that in a few years more women in the field will come to speak at universities and schools – I’ve already seen it, but it needs to keep growing. This allows girls to see from a young age that they can enter and succeed in engineering. Getting involved with STEM-focused organizations and staying current with WES is a good place to start. Applying for a course is the first step!
Amara: Although it’s a very male-dominated industry right now, don’t let that stop you! Never stop learning, take advantage of every opportunity and network for your future. If you believe in yourself, nothing can stop you.
Ruby: Do it! If you are interested then go for it. Many courses and additional support are available if needed. There is almost always something you can do to increase your experience and knowledge. Be confident and enthusiastic. The key to learning is to ask lots of questions!

Depending on career goals and individual university majors, sound engineering courses may focus on producing sound for film or television, developing new audio technologies for radio, or operating sound equipment for large venues. such as theaters or sports fields.
Abes Engineering College
The University of Michigan offers an audio engineering program for undergraduate students with several courses devoted to the fundamentals of audio engineering. Classes include voice, computer music composition and arrangement, sound reinforcement, recording, theater sound, and technical ear training. Lawrence Technological University, also located in Michigan, offers audio engineering courses as part of its undergraduate audio engineering technology curriculum. LTU offers 24 credit hours of audio engineering courses, including production skills, digital recording, audio production, microphone, and audio engineering programs.
William Paterson University in New Jersey offers a variety of audio engineering courses as part of the school’s undergraduate audio engineering program. Classes available include sound fundamentals, production techniques, digital consoles, editing, multi-track recording, and reverb theory. In Connecticut, the University of Hartford offers several sound engineering courses in analog and digital electronics, acoustics, and broadcasting. Audio engineering offerings at Johns Hopkins University’s Peabody Institute in Maryland include music acoustics, advanced recording systems, audio science, noise control, system design, and computer modeling.
California State University Long Beach offers an audio engineering option for undergraduates studying another engineering field. Students will discuss how the music, art, or entertainment industries rely on audio engineers to create, record, and produce sound. Students will also learn to analyze and design music production instruments. The University of Colorado Denver offers several sound engineering classes, including audio production, software development, digital synthesis, studio and live sound engineering for various productions.
Located in Nashville, Tennessee, Belmont University offers several audio engineering courses, including Physics for Audio Engineering, Hearing Perception, Hearing Science, Electronics and Circuit Theory, and Recording Technology. The University of Miami’s music engineering undergraduate program includes a number of courses related to sound engineering. Music theory, keyboard studies, music majors, music technology, recorded music operations, and artist development are some of the courses available.

NASHVILLE, Tennessee, February 02, 2022 — Belmont University’s Mike Crabb College of Entertainment and Music Business has installed two solid-state Logic ORIGIN 32-channel analog mixing consoles for use in the school’s Audio Engineering Technology program. One SSL ORIGIN console was installed in the Robert E. Mulloy Student Studio on Belmont’s main campus, and the other in the Ocean Way Nashville recording studios.
Studio A at the Robert E. Mulloy (REM) studio and Studio B in Ocean Way Nashville previously housed obsolete large format analog desks from another manufacturer. “We had to replace the consoles for a while,” says faculty member Michael Janas, chair of Audio Engineering Technology (AET). Looking at console replacement options during REM Studio A renovations in 2019, he recalls, “ORIGIN came up and I thought it looked interesting – and the price proposition looked very interesting! “
