University Of Southern Mississippi Graduate Programs – The University of Southern Mississippi’s graduate nursing program was ranked among the best in the state and ranked among the best programs nationwide in a recent review by US News & World Report.
A total of 503 schools of nursing that offered master’s or doctoral degrees with Commission-accredited collegiate nursing education or nursing education accreditation were examined. The newly expanded rankings are the first time US News has ranked graduate nursing programs.

246 of the studied majors were included in the publication’s master’s degree ranking. Of Mississippi’s six graduate nursing programs, Southern Miss ranked highest nationally at 102nd.

For US News’ Best Nursing Schools 2016 rankings, the publication chose to rank master’s programs because they provide the most nursing degrees, with nearly 500 accredited programs. At Southern Miss, the Nurse Practitioner (NP) program is a two-year academic program that uses an innovative academic and research-based approach to prepare graduates for primary care—one of today’s health care needs. in a caring environment.
Upon completion of the NP program, students earn a master’s degree in nursing, which allows them to sit for national certification exams and state licensure. Currently, 188 students are participating in the graduate program of the College of Nursing.

Scholars of war and society generally examine the relationships between societies’ social, cultural, and political values and their wars. Several Southern Miss historians have characteristics that complement this view. Our postgraduate program can also support more traditional military history topics such as operations, strategy and tactics. Our program thus allows for great flexibility and creativity in combining traditional military history approaches in the study of the history of war and society and conflict.
We hope to produce students who can speak to a wide range of literature and enter the workforce as well-rounded and broadly educated scholars. Home to faculty with a unique concentration of interests in the study of war, the Dale Center trains graduate students for careers in college and university teaching, research, professional military education, government, or nonprofit work. Master of Arts students interested in war and social issues can pursue degrees in American history, European history, or war and society. American or European programs are more common, allowing students to minor in war and society and write their MA thesis on war and society. Students Considering a Ph.D. Prospective degree holders are encouraged to apply for these programs. Students take several core classes in methods and methods of history, as well as specialized historiography courses in American or European history. In addition, students in these programs take a comprehensive exam, develop a foreign language or research tool, and write a master’s thesis.
Southern Miss also offers a master’s degree in war and society, which is based on coursework and a comprehensive exam. MS students are not eligible for funding.

All PhD students must focus primarily on American or European history, but may also focus on war and society. Most PhD students interested in this field choose War and Society as their minor field and write a thesis focusing on War and Society. However, students must be prepared to fully teach the major and minor areas of their thesis.
After the master’s degree, at least twenty-four (54) semester courses are required, including history courses related to the student’s major and minor, and additional 600/700 level courses in the student’s major and minor. comprehensive comprehensive exams (written and oral) in the major and two minor areas, as well as writing an original and convincing thesis. PhD students must have reading skills in two (2) foreign languages (or, in the case of Americans, one foreign language and an alternative “research tool”).
We offer a number of competitive scholarships for both MA and PhD. The application deadline for students is February 1. First time applicants must indicate on their application that they wish to participate as an assistant. Assistants Students working on the MA usually work as a grader, instructor in the history lab, or as a teaching assistant. At the Ph.D. level, students may serve as graders, teaching assistants, or read their own History Chapters 101 or 102. Other types of assistant tasks can also be assigned. Assistants do not work more than twenty (20) hours a week. They receive a stipend, tuition waivers (in-state or out-of-state), and basic health insurance (with one student per pay period).

The University Libraries at Southern Miss have a growing collection to support our war and social science research areas. Of particular interest to military historians are the archives of the 103d Infantry Division, which contain many documents and artifacts from the World War II era. Special collections in university libraries offer a variety of historical sources, from fifteenth-century illuminated manuscripts to Civil War letters, civil rights documents, and extant Mississippiana. Special collections are housed in the William David McCann Building, built in 1976. About 24,000 square feet are devoted to special collections, which consist of four units: the University Archives; Rare Books and Mississippiana; historical manuscripts; and the de Grumond collection of children’s literature.
In addition to these specialized resources, the award-winning Center for Oral History and Cultural Heritage (COHCH) contains a collection of hundreds of interviews focusing on the American wartime experience. These interviews are available to students, and graduate students have access to research tools related to oral history techniques with COHCH staff.
The War and Society Program has an active study abroad program in conjunction with the University’s Center for International Education. Enrolled students can conduct initial research abroad and have the opportunity to study war history in places such as France, Great Britain and Vietnam.
